Across the world, each year we celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Join United Nations Association USA - Orange County & San Diego this year in reaffirming the principles of equality and non-discrimination that are at the very heart of human rights.

Equality and Non-Discrimination is aligned with the 2030 Agenda and with the UN approach set out in the document Shared Framework on Leaving No One Behind. This includes addressing and finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, including women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants and people with disabilities, among others.

Equality, inclusion and non-discrimination, in other words - a human rights-based approach to development - is the best way to reduce inequalities and resume our path towards realizing the 2030 Agenda.

In honor of Pride week in San Diego, we are very proud to host an event focused on fostering effective ally-ship in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Even though we’ve come a long way in the advancement of Human Rights for all, there is still a pressing need to promote visibility, learn about the diversity in humanity, and acknowledge the advocates that are at the forefront of the fight for a just, equal, and welcoming society.

A very special thank you to the San Diego LGBTQ Latinx Coalition and Free Mom Hugs SoCal for participating in our panel today, showcasing their efforts fostering ally-ship in our communities.

This years’ World Press Freedom Day on May 3, focuses on “Information as a Public Good” and in this U.N. Info Session, UNA-USA San Diego hosts a chat with Chida Rebecca, a Chapter Board Member and the Deputy Director of Communications for the City of San Diego’s Mayor, Todd Gloria.

Chida shines light on the importance of journalism, especially on the local level, with her immense background in writing, editing, and publishing in San Diego. Chida’s involvement in journalism began with her family’s business, The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper which serves as the city’s oldest and largest African American publication and has been around for nearly 60 years, where she did serve as co-publisher and managing editor. Currently, Chida is the Editor-in-Chief of Black & Magazine, which is a premier digital Black lifestyle publication, catering to the 22 to 44-year-old African American demographic

Chida ultimately strives to build immunity towards racial injustice and community injustice through her faith, journalism, and commitment to fairly and accurately representing marginalized communities in light of local issues. She uses freedom of the press to educate those in her community on local conditions, seeking to teach others the power of pen and paper, and the magnitude of embracing “one’s true story” in light of the liberties allowed by freedom of the press.

World Press Freedom Day and Chida Rebecca’s work reflects the Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education (4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8), Reducing Inequalities (10), Peace, Justice, & Strong Institutions (16), and Partnerships for the Goals (17).
