This July, a team of female recreational soccer players – ranging in ages from 41 to 77 – embark on a nine-day trip to Norway, Europe. Through the personal initiative by Brandi Mitchell, the San Diego Soccer Women team has been invited for friendly matches at the famous Henningsvaer Field in Lofoten Islands and at an exhibition event at Norway Cup 2018 in Oslo, Norway.
As local ambassadors for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), #GlobalGoalsLocalLeaders, the nineteen athletes have chosen to highlight & raise awareness for three of the seventeen SDGs during their tournaments:
- GOAL 3 | Good Health and Well-Being The physical, emotional and mental benefits of exercise;
- GOAL 5 | Gender Equality Equitable opportunities for women and girls worldwide;
- GOAL10 | Reduced Inequalities Discrimination based on age, gender and sexual orientation.
Locally supported by the United Nations Association of San Diego (UNA USA San Diego) on this ambassadorial trip, San Diego Soccer Women is scheduled to meet with Norwegian Government Officials and representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during the nine-day trip.
We witnessed that from gender inequalities to sustainable cities, when people are given the space, encouragement and connections to engage with the Global Goals, we stand a chance to realize them together within our lifetime ~ Bettina Hausmann, Executive Director, UNA USA San Diego
